Do dashcams lower commercial truck insurance premiums?

Dashcams can help lower commercial truck insurance costs over time, but installing them alone rarely produces an immediate premium reduction. What matters to underwriters is how you use them.

Forward-facing cameras are widely valued because they can quickly show what happened in an accident. In many cases footage clears a driver of fault, which can shorten claims, reduce payouts, and keep losses off your record. That improved loss history is where most of the long-term savings come from.

Driver-facing cameras and event-based systems go further by identifying distracted driving, phone use, fatigue, and other risky behaviors before they cause an accident. Underwriters generally view them positively when there's a real program behind them: someone reviews flagged events, drivers are coached, and repeat issues lead to consequences.

There are tradeoffs. Footage can cut both ways in litigation. If a camera captures risky behavior and the company didn't act on it, that can be used against you. Retention policies, review procedures, and documented follow-up all matter. Driver acceptance can also be a challenge, particularly with inward-facing cameras.

When presenting a camera program to underwriters, be specific. Explain what systems you use, how events are reviewed, how quickly coaching happens, and what results you've seen. A camera program with documented follow-through is a meaningful part of a strong submission.
